1)Crystalline hydrate
Ba(OH)₂·8H₂O molecular weight 315.47, for colorless monoclinic crystal, relative density 2.18, dissolution point 78℃, boiling point: 780℃, heating water loss into anhydrous barium hydroxide. Both are poisonous.

2)Solubility
Most alkali insoluble in water, Barium Hydroxide is one of the alkalis which is soluble in water. Barium Hydroxide solids placed in the air are extremely prone to deliquescence and then combines with carbon dioxide to form Barium Carbonate and water.The solubility at 20°C is 3.89g in 100g water.

Chemical Properties

1)Strong alkaline
Ba(OH)₂ with strong alkalinity, its alkalinity is the strongest in the alkali earth metal hydroxide, can make phenolphthalein solution red, purple litmus blue.
Ba(OH)₂ can absorb carbon dioxide from the air,turns into barium carbonate.
Ba(OH)₂ + CO2 == BaCO3 ↓ + H₂O
BA (OH)₂ can neutralize with acid, in which sulfuric acid precipitation: Ba(OH)₂+H₂SO4== BaSO4 ↓+2H₂O
Mainly used to make special soap, insecticide, also used in hard water softening, sugar beet saccharin, boiler descaling, glass lubrication, etc., used in organic synthesis and preparation of barium salt.

2)Corrosivity
Because of the strong alkalinity of barium hydroxide, barium hydroxide is corrosive to skin, paper, etc.

Dehydrate the Barium Hydroxide,Octahydrate which is prepared from Barium containing raw material (Barite or Barolite) was under the conditions of vacuum degree 73.3 ~ 93.3kPa and temperature 70 ~ 90℃ for 60 ~ 90min.

Applications

1)It is mainly used as the additive for the lubricant of internal-combustion engine. It is a kind of superfinish multi-purpose additive for barium-based grease and oil.
2)Used as a catalyst for the synthesis of phenolic resin.
The condensation polymerization reaction is easy to control, the prepared resin viscosity is low, the curing speed is fast, the catalyst is easy to remove.The reference dosage is 1% ~ 1.5% of phenol.
3)Used as a catalyst for water-soluble urea modified phenol - formaldehyde adhesive. The cured product is pale yellow. The residual barium salt in the resin does not affect the dielectric property and chemical stability.
4)Used as an analytical reagent
Used in the separation and precipitation of sulphate and the manufacture of barium salts,It is suitable for organic synthesis and other barium salt fabrication.
5)Determination of carbon dioxide in the air.
6)Quantification of chlorophyll.
7)It can also be used for beet sugar fabrication and medicine. Refining of sugar and animal and vegetable oils.
8)Used as Boiler water cleaner; demineralized water.
9)Used as Pesticides.

Health Hazard

1)Invasion route: Inhalation and ingestion.
2)Health hazards: acute poisoning after oral administration manifested as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, bradynia, progressive myopalsy, heart rhythm disorder, significantly reduced blood potassium and so on.But because rhythm of the heart is disordered and breathing muscle is paralytic and die.Inhalation of smoke can cause poisoning, but gastrointestinal symptoms are not obvious.Exposure to high temperature solution of this product can cause skin burns and absorption poisoning.
3)Chronic Influence: workers exposed to barium compound for a long time may have weakness, shortness of breath, salivation, oral mucosa swelling and erosion, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, diarrhea, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, hair loss and so on.

Emergency method

1)Emergency response to leakage
Isolate the contaminated leaking area and restrict access.Emergency personnel are advised to wear self-contained breathing apparatus and gas protective clothing.Do not come into direct contact with the spill.Small leakage: to avoid dust, use a clean shovel to collect in a dry, clean, covered container.Large leakage: cover with plastic cloth and canvas to reduce flying.It is then collected, recycled or transported to a waste disposal site for disposal.
2)Protective measures
Respiratory system protection: when you may come into contact with the dust, you must wear a dustproof respirator with electric air supply and filter.In case of emergency rescue or evacuation, it is recommended to wear an air breathing apparatus.
